Alcoa employees shine with PRIDE

Around 100 Alcoa employees showed their allyship in Saturday’s Perth Pride Parade supporting Western Australia’s LGBT+ community.

Alcoa was the first resources company to march in the Pride Parade and has been a formal partner of Pride WA since 2019.

Spearheaded by Alcoa’s ally network EAGLE (Alcoa for LGBT+ Equality), employees from all facets of the business marched together in the belief that inclusion means everyone has the right be themselves at work, home and in the community.

Alcoa’s EAGLE lead and Wagerup Alumina Refinery Manager Mark Hodgson said the parade was a popular way for employees to publicly support and celebrate as members and allies of the LGBT+ community.

“Alcoa strives to be an inclusive and supportive workplace where people can come to work and feel safe, equal and valued for who they are,” said Hodgson. “Everyone, regardless of their sexual identification or orientation, should be valued for the diversity of ideas and experiences they bring. With the parade returning to Northbridge, there was a palpable sense of excitement in the air which was amazing to be a part of.”

Alcoa, which operates bauxite mines and alumina refineries in the Kwinana, Peel and Upper South West areas of WA, also supports Pride in Peel which runs activities in the Mandurah area throughout the year and is again partnering with the Bunbury Fringe Festival in January next year. Earlier this year, Alcoa was acknowledged as a Silver Tier Employer under the Australian Workplace Equality Index program that benchmarks LGBT+ workplace inclusion - the highest standard received this year by any company in the resources industry.
