Alcoa apprenticeships applications now open
In a continuation of Alcoa’s proud history of training generations of skilled tradespeople, the global bauxite, alumina and aluminium producer has launched its 2023 WA apprenticeship recruitment campaign which runs until 19 July 2022.
Playing an important role in the company’s future, Alcoa will recruit 36 apprentices to commence at its Western Australian operations in January 2023.
Successful applicants will earn a nationally recognised trade certificate over four years in one of the trade categories of mechanical fitter, heavy duty plant mechanic, fabricator/welder, electrical instrumentation technician or light vehicle mechanic.
All roles are offered with industry competitive remuneration and benefits and employees can live close to operations which are in the Peel and Upper Southwest regions and Perth metropolitan area.
For first year Mechanical Fitter apprentice and Greenfields resident Leon Price, working at Alcoa’s Wagerup Aluminium Refinery means he can establish his career in the resources sector and still come home after his shift every night.
“I wanted to work at a mine site but not away from home, so I applied for the Alcoa apprenticeship program because their locations are close to where I live,” Mr Price said.
“Every day I get to work with great people as part of a team and it’s fantastic being able to move around different locations and gain experience at various sites.
“We are given a great start as apprentices, are supplied with a new set of tools and Alcoa covers my TAFE fees and required books. All first year apprentices also complete a three week onboarding hand skills course which I really enjoyed.
“To anyone considering applying for an apprenticeship at Alcoa, I would say go for it! My goal is to complete my apprenticeship to the highest standard so it gives me an opportunity for future employment with Alcoa as it is close to home.”
Committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace, Alcoa supports women, people of different backgrounds and those with a variety of skills and life experiences.
For two decades they have been named an Employer of Choice for Gender Equality and through their association with Pride in Diversity are recognised as a Silver Tier Employer in the Australian Workplace Equality Index for LGBTI+ inclusion. Alcoa has well supported employee inclusion groups for gender, LBGTI and racial-ethnic equality.
Alcoa employs some 3750 people in Western Australia and contributes hundreds of millions of dollars each year to the WA economy.
